    Healthcare Premiums to Increase by 3.7 Percent; Increases for APWU Plans Will Be Less

    (09/25/13) The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) announced on Sept. 24 that the average premium rate for the 8.2 million people covered by the Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) Program will increase by 3.7 percent in 2014. Increases for employees covered by the APWU Health Plan's High Option and Consumer Driven Option will be lower, with increases of just 3 percent. One widely-used FEHB plan reports an increase as high as 7 percent.

    Relief Grants Available for Colorado Flood Victims from Postal Employees Relief Fund

    (09/23/13) Postal workers who suffered property losses due to the recent flooding in Colorado may be eligible for financial assistance through the Postal Relief Fund. Sixty-five USPS workers suffered damage to their home as a result of the flooding, which inundated parts of nine counties, reports APWU Human Relations Department Director Sue Carney.

    In Senate Testimony, Guffey Blasts Carper-Coburn Bill; Bill is 'Fatally Flawed': Penalizes Workers, Cuts Service

    (09/19/13) APWU President Cliff Guffey told a Senate panel on Sept. 19 that the postal bill introduced by Sen. Tom Carper (D-DE) and Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) is "fatally flawed." The bill (S. 1486) "fails to correct the cause of the Postal Service's financial crisis -- the mandate in the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act of 2006 (PAEA) that requires the USPS to pre-fund healthcare benefits for future retirees," Guffey said.

    Second Day of Hearings On USPS 'POStPlan'

    (09/19/13) A second day of arbitration hearings was held Sept. 19 on the APWU's grievance protesting management's "POStPlan." The first day of hearings was May 1, when union presented its case. The union charges that the plan, which resulted in a drastic reduction in the hours of operation at thousands of post offices, also deprives the APWU members of thousands of jobs, in violation of the 2010-2015 Collective Bargaining Agreement.

    Ballot Corrections

    (09/17/13) The APWU National Election Committee has announced plans to address errors in ballots mailed to some APWU members. Ballots mailed to members of the APWU Retirees Department who pay $36 per year in dues inadvertently listed two races they are not eligible to vote for -- Industrial Relations Director and Organization Director.
