    APWU Calls on PRC to Investigate Delayed Mail; Missing Teen's Letter Took Two Weeks to Reach Mother, Szeredy Tells Panel

    (12/11/13) APWU Executive Vice President Debby Szeredy called on the Postal Regulatory Commission to conduct an investigation into delayed mail at the agency's public meeting on Dec. 11. Szeredy described a Dec. 7 CNN report about a missing 16 year old girl from Conway NH who wrote to her mother within two weeks of her disappearance. The letter was dated Oct. 22 and was postmarked Oct. 23, but it wasn't delivered to Abigail Hernandez's mother until Nov. 6, more than two weeks later.

    Budget Deal Announced: Future Postal, Federal Workers to Pay More for Retirement Benefits

    (12/11/13) A proposed budget deal announced late on Dec. 10 would require postal and federal workers hired after Dec. 31, 2013, to pay more toward their retirement benefits. The increase would not apply to employees who are already on the rolls and would not affect current retirees.

    (12/09/13) Richard H. Logan, National Business Agent for the Maintenance Craft, passed away on Dec. 5. He was 59. Logan was a member of the Providence (RI) Area Local and was an outspoken advocate for the rights of his co-workers. "We are deeply saddened by Rick's death," said APWU President Mark Dimondstein. "Our hearts go out to his family."

    PRC Ruling: One More Week to Prove USPS is Violating Service Standards

    (12/03/13) In a ruling responding to a complaint filed by the APWU, the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) issued an order on Nov. 27 giving the APWU two weeks to submit additional evidence that the Postal Service is regularly violating its own mandatory service standards. The APWU complaint alleges that the Postal Service's failure to comply with its overnight delivery standards for first-class mail and periodicals is denying the APWU and its locals -- as customers -- as well as other mailers, the level of service required by USPS regulations.

Some sites opened quietly in October and others have opened in the last two weeks, including some where ribbon-cutting ceremonies were held.
